I just discovered Twitter.........Sure I have been on Facebook for ages (160+ friends) and its something I use to Map out who I know. I assumed Twitter was a way that teenagers wasted their days away gossiping about nothing. Apparently I was wrong.

I am doing my 2nd year of an IT degree and I am told (through Geek Podcast's) that on my CV I need to include my Facebook page and my Twitter account and how many followers I have as part of my qualifications. Crazy aye?

This has made me examine Twitter closely. It turns out that Twitter is the new powerful "word of mouth" system and has taken off at an amazing rate. Ashton Kutcher has about 5 million followers (I have 18) so that means if he makes a statement or recommendation all these people will take a look at it. Pretty cool.

Below is a link to a promo video (all in German I think) that has some jaw dropping statistics on how huge the "social media" thing is. If we are 8 years behind the rest of the world I say get on board now. I am.

P.S I got the above link from one of my followers on Twitter.

It's funny, so many businesses here in NZ have tried to ignore the Social Media revolution...reminding me of the uptake of DVD players in households, until the 'video stores' no longer had videos!

Overseas people are now asked in job interviews how many followers and social networks they belong to to access their networking skills!

Here's an English version with similar statistics.

In August so far, Twitter has accounted for just over 18% of traffic referrals for www.rephub.co.nz

Certainly worth a few minutes each day for us to be involved, and hopefully the companies we Tweet about are getting similar traffic from our Tweets too.

In saying that, there is SO much more I'm sure we could be doing with Twitter to improve our traffic rate even more.
